This isn’t exactly a “for sale” ad, but rather some information to generate interest. I live in western WI, and have been working with the San Clemente Island goat breed since 2o13. Slowly but surely I have been working on understanding and preserving a line called Tepper in the San Clemente Island goat breed. As well as working on two uncommon color variations that occur both with the Tepper line, but also just in the breed.

There is plenty of information on my website, but I am looking to work with people who may be interested in Tepper line preservation. As my website states, there is a community statement as well as contracts that allow for “free” adoption options if people agree to follow through with the contractual agreement.

There is also a very small group of breeders working together on Tepper Line preservation projects. And we are looking for more dedicated breeders to become involved in both the short- and long-term aspects of this project. With the caveat that adoption practices are strictly my own and do not reflect the practices of the breeders involved in the Tepper Line project.

You certainly don’t need to be an expert on genetics, as the group works together to problem-solve and discuss best breeding practices. Though a big hurdle for many oncoming breeders is the unfortunate scarcity of the Tepper Line SCI goats. This means organizing safe transport for goats to new locations.

Another aspect that is important is scouting around for new potential breeders. It’s one thing to grow a population of animals; it’s another thing to find people who want to be involved with this project. Good marketing and promotion tactics are very helpful.

The Tepper Line preservation group meets remotely as needed (maybe 2-4 times a year) and stays in regular email correspondence. We register all SCI goats with the SCIGBA, as this is another important step to help keep track of animals.
