Heritage breeds are endangered, and good breeding principles are important to ensuring their long term survival. Preventing genetic losses requires careful planning. In most breeds it is possible to balance conservation breeding with selection for productivity, allowing breeders to meet the production goals for their farms. In 2014, The Livestock Conservancy analyzed the genetic structure of five heritage breeds and developed the following breeding recommendations specific to the breeders and bloodlines of those breeds.
